Constructed a century ago, this beach cabin was in a dilapidated state before undergoing a transformative revival led by prdastudio. Operating within the constraints of stringent shoreline regulations, the studio reimagined and reconstructed the dwelling, rescuing it from neglect and imminent collapse. Situated on a narrow dead-end street, the project was conceived as an idyllic second home, becoming both a tribute to its surroundings and a showcase for the client's whimsical art collection.
The restoration began by unveiling long-concealed roof trusses, a starting point for the meticulous renovation. The studio thoughtfully opened and interconnected the house to the breathtaking views and unparalleled beauty of the Puget Sound. Along the west façade, we placed expansive French windows creating an ethereal sensation as if the spaces were suspended over the water.
After raising the house to insert a new foundation, we strategically designed a stairway addition to seamlessly link the main floor to the basement. The lower level, now offering tall ceilings and direct access to the shoreline, houses a newly added ensuite guest room and a recreational space, enhancing the cabin's functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Inspired by the first warm day of spring, the residence embraces a palette of soft sky blues, greens, and browns that infuses warmth into the pristine whites of its walls and ceilings. Within this canvas, art blossoms with vibrant colors, creating an atmosphere that feels both lively and serene.
The architecture is unadorned and straightforward, fostering an environment where living feels effortless. The open and fluid spaces of the house gracefully expand and contract with the changing weather, offering a dynamic experience that harmonizes with the natural elements. Amidst this tranquil backdrop, the vibrant hues and imaginative forms of art and sculpture contribute to a space that both exudes joy and creativity and a connection to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
